Painting with Watercolors in Olhão,Portugal
September 15 - 22, 2027
with Shirley Lehner-Rhoades
Taught in English
Olhão, Portugal: A Painter’s Algarve
Forget the resort strip. Olhão is where the Algarve still lives and works. Its whitewashed, flat-roofed houses stack up like geometric blocks beneath a huge southern sky, and morning light slides down narrow lanes toward a working harbor where fishing boats come and go with the tide. Wander the waterfront market, then climb to a rooftop terrace and watch the town’s cubist rooftops glow as the day warms. Beyond the harbor, the Ria Formosa lagoon spreads out in ribbons of sand, salt flats and shallow, shimmering water. A short ferry ride carries you to car-free islands where the palette shifts from terracotta and whitewash to turquoise, sand and sea-glass green.
Spend a week immersed in the art of plein air painting under the guidance of Shirley Lehner-Rhoades, a professional graphic artist, typographer and painter with more than thirty years of experience. Shirley’s warm, encouraging teaching helps painters of every level see more, paint with confidence and bring home work they’re proud of.
Your creative home: the Chichester House
Your base is the beautifully restored, centrally located Chichester House, featured in Home & Gardens magazine. Each morning begins with a live painting demonstration from Shirley, set against sweeping views over the rooftops from the sunlit patios. Then you’ll set up your easel and paint, with inspiration at every turn, steps from your door and throughout the surrounding streets.
Island days
Twice during the week, we’ll board ferries to the barrier islands of Armona and Culatra, where colorful, flower-adorned cottages, unspoiled nature and pristine beaches make for some of the most paintable scenes in the region. It’s the kind of day that stays with you long after the week is over: salt air, open skies and a brush in your hand.

It was a unique experience. I was completely absorbed by the culture of Portugal and the focus on art(both learning and painting/sketching)

Settle into the Chichester House, a beautifully restored townhouse set in the heart of Olhão’s historic center. Bright, airy private rooms offer a peaceful retreat after a day at the easel, and sunlit patios give you sweeping views across the rooftops. The house is reserved exclusively for our group, so you can relax, paint and share the week with fellow artists in complete privacy.
Laid-back charm at the historic townhouse in Olhão known as
Chichester House
On the corner of two quiet, pedestrianised streets in the fishing town of Olhão, this former merchant's house is flooded with natural light. The picturesque blue exterior gives just a hint of the treasures within. Visitors arriving for their Algarve holiday step through the weathered doors and directly into a grand entry hall. Carefully restored by designer Julian Chichester and his filmmaker wife Holly, this historic home maintains its magnificent architectural heritage.
Floors of cool stone and locally fired terracotta will lead you through light, air-filled rooms, where unpolished brickwork meets timber beams and deep, lime-washed arches. The original wooden windows and traditional shutters have been meticulously preserved. Throw them open to look out over the grid of town streets and to let in the sea air from the nearby cove.
As far as possible, features have been restored to their original glory, from the beautiful patina of the cornicing to the rich, solid floorboards. Explore the collection of international auction finds along with specific pieces from Julian Chichester’s commercial furniture and lighting lines, as mentioned in the house design review on houseandgarden.co.uk. You’ll find rich textiles and rattan chairs, custom-detailed embroidery and custom-made brass set against minimalist plaster walls. The design is at once eclectic and charming, deeply personal and elegantly luxurious. Step outside to find multiple sun-splashed terraces, including a roof terrace with its own kitchen and second-floor terrace with a plunge pool - the ultimate oasis.
High praise: Excellent instruction; Well organized; Beautiful location & accommodations --- Callouts: -- All levels welcomed, with customized instruction based on level -- Lessons elevated everyone’s skills -- Flexibility for what (or if) to sketch -- Collegial, mutually supportive environment -- Special events, e.g. fish-printing, flamenco dancing, local sketch group meet-up, gourmet final dinner -- Bespoke, fun, engaging.
