Dalmatian Island Cruise
Aboard a Gulet Schooner
May 17 - 24,
2025  FULL
May 24 - 31, 2025  2 twin cabins left
with Laurie Wigham

Taught in English
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: DEC. 31, 2024

A gulet is a beautifully restored wooden Turkish schooner, a traditional two-masted wooden sailing vessel from the southwestern coast of Turkey.  Gulet schooners were built in the coastal towns of Bodrum and Marmaris, although similar vessels can be found all around the eastern Mediterranean.  Note that we will not be cruising under sail, but under motor.

Space is limited to a maximum of 8-10 participants. There are currently two cabins available for the week of May 24-31, 2025.  Must book with a cabin mate as we won't be pairing people up.

Cabin size is 8.5 m2 (incl. bathroom) with double bed (190x130 cm) and single bed (190x70 cm), so each cabin can accommodate either a couple or two friends.

The cruise includes half-board (breakfast and dinner).  Drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are NOT included, but can be purchased at the bar at any time.  All breakfasts and dinners will be served on board, prepared by our personal Croatian gourmet chef, and lunches will be at the participant's choice of eateries on the islands we visit (lunches are NOT included).

Per Person Price (shared cabin):

3300 euros

- Includes breakfast and dinner on board

- Six hours of teaching daily

- Island hopping cruise from Split to Dubrovnik

The classes will be a mix of technical information (how to mix colors, seat-of-the-pants perspective, good inks to use in fountain pens, etc.) and creative exploration to develop each student's unique voice. All levels of experience are welcome; it will be a small group so I can give each student individual attention. In my own work I switch mediums frequently to make myself pay attention to what’s happening on the page, but also to reach for what technique will best tell the story of this time, this place. Participants can use whatever medium they’re most familiar with, but I will bring a bag of random art supplies so students can try out things they don’t know how to use and get a chance to make a mess. Discovering what a new tool wants to do can open up doors you didn’t even know were there. I’m looking forward to exploring these beautiful islands and discovering the stories each place wants us to tell.

Drawing Instructor Laurie Wigham

After nearly three decades doing graphic design and illustration in the tech industry, Laurie fell out of love with the computer and went back to making art without an undo button and getting ink stains on her fingers. Laurie works in the wilderness and on city streets, and her watercolors have been shown at galleries around the Bay Area. She has taught sketching for SF State University’s Sierra Nevada Field Campus, the Urban Sketchers organization, John Muir Laws’ Nature Journal Club and during her artist residencies in national parks. She founded and leads the SF Sketchers Meetup group, which has nearly 5,000 members and hosts sketching events around the Bay Area.
